In the RO seminar we stress counting shots during Virginia Count and Fixed Time scored stages, and for divisions with limited capacity, especially on unloaded starts. Even though Production has changed from 10 rounds in the magazine after the start signal to 15 rounds, you still need to count! Let’s discuss why in this Question of the Month.

Last year, we had a Fixed Time stage at nationals and quickly learned that many folks have never seen that scoring method and were confused about how Fixed Time works and is scored. By using that scoring method at nationals, we are now seeing it pop up more in local matches and other major matches. But what are all the differences between the different scoring methods in USPSA?

A recent NROI Question of the Month, stemming from an occurrence at a level III match, created a fair amount of confusion due to the answer to the question being “no penalty”. In this unusual scenario, by process of elimination and a careful read of 10.2.2 and 10.2.2.1, there logically was no reason to apply a penalty for firing more than the “only” shots specified in the stage briefing for a classifier, CM 99-11, El Presidente. Due to a fair amount of pushback on this answer, the RMI corps decided to re-examine this rule and see if we could look into its history, because the language in 10.2.2.1 appeared to prevent the procedural penalty for not following the “only” language in the WSB. In this case the competitor did not fire any shots in excess of the 12 total specified in the WSB. He also reloaded when indicated, and per the definition of stacking, did not stack. See this follow up post.
