A question we get now and then from newer shooters revolves around when they should take the NROI Level 1, or “RO” seminar. The answer is pretty straightforward, “As soon as you can!” although there are a few qualifications and nuances you might want to consider.

Bootcamp? Well, if you have visions of running five miles with a full size popper on each shoulder or overhead pressing wall sections, …wrong type of bootcamp. A few years ago NROI started field testing a new concept for the Level 2, Chief Range Officer course called a Bootcamp. This was the brain child of Instructor Ray Hirst and it entirely changed the way we do the CRO class now. Years ago, the CRO course was more about stage design, mostly in the classroom or by correspondence, and less about running a stage efficiently. That left us with a problem finding people that actually knew how to run stages at major matches. The Bootcamp format of the class changed all that.

So you have been enjoying the sport for a few weeks, months, or years and you say you have never taken the RO seminar because you don’t want to be an RO. Okay, but do you realize that the RO seminar will quite likely make you a better shooter? Yes, really. If you have been shooting for a while you probably have learned the rules, such as you know them, from fellow shooters and by watching others. But do you really KNOW the rules and are the rules you “know” really the rules? Maybe, maybe not.

USPSA has created a robust and comprehensive online system to facilitate host club’s seminar requests. This system automatically notifies instructors of the request, and asks for their availability for the selected dates. It also automatically locates the range address for the host club, based on the club code, along with displaying other information provided by the host, such as cost, contact information, and payment options. All of this happens once an instructor is assigned and the seminar is published. All open seminars can be found by following this link: https://uspsa.org/seminars.

NROI has developed and implemented some new training modules as part of an online Learning Management System, or LMS. The initial modules involve two pre-seminar tests on Moodle, an interactive and highly adaptable online training system. For level one seminars, registrants will be sent a link to log into our training system and take the exams, which are designed as teaching tools as much as they are tests. The results don’t count against you in any way, and the answers can be discussed during the seminar. As each question is answered, there is a short discussion note that follows your submission, explaining what the correct answer is and why. The tests are designed to acquaint the students with the USPSA rules and get them going through the rulebook prior to the seminar—they replace Tests A and B from the workbook.
