Question of the Month Results

Is that an alpha or a charlie?

December 2, 2021 by Jodi Humann

IPSC targets have different shaped scoring areas than USPSA targets, but the target scoring principles are still the same as on USPSA targets. Let’s look at the scoring question and results from the November Question of the Month and see how many people got it right.

Outside vs. Completely Outside

November 4, 2021 by Jodi Humann

The October Question of the Month addressed a question that we answer frequently. Here is the situation: The PCC start position is standing anywhere outside the shooting area. Carbine muzzle is pointed downrange, loaded and held in both hands with safety on. The competitor in the picture has his PCC loaded with safety on and pointed downrange and is waiting for the “Are You Ready?” command. Should the RO proceed with the range commands?

Non-scoring borders

October 7, 2021 by Jodi Humann

Scoring targets properly is one of the key jobs of all range officials, however occasionally there is a target array setup that makes the RO overthink and results in the incorrect call. For the September Question of the Month, we took a picture of a target setup that is often miscalled and asked, “How do you score these targets?”

Target Presentation

September 2, 2021 by Kevin Imel

For the August Question of the Month, we asked you to score a target. Simple enough, right? Except one of the options we gave you was “Fix target, reshoot”. What? Yep…and, that was actually the right answer. Read on…

Schrodinger’s PCC Flag

August 5, 2021 by Jodi Humann

We have received multiple questions about whether a PCC that is transported between stages in a case and is only out of the case during the COF needs to be flagged. So, for the July Question of the Month we posed the following question: A PCC competitor comes to the line with a cased PCC. After you give the Make Ready command, he opens the case and you see a PCC with the bolt locked back and no chamber flag inserted. What do you do?

Non-Target Steel

July 1, 2021 by Kevin Imel

For the June 2021 Question of the Month, we asked a question about a competitor hitting steel that was not itself a target and what, if anything, the RO should do.

Zero score?

June 3, 2021 by Jodi Humann

Now that magnets are allowed in all the divisions, most competitors have added them to their gear, but some run afoul of the distance of the magazine from the inside of the belt. Which is why we asked this Question of the Month: During the course of fire, a Production competitor places a mag on a magnet that is attached to a mag pouch. The magnet is on the side of the pouch opposite of where the belt attachment is which puts the edge of the magazine, that is retained by the magnet, 2.5 inches away from the inner most surface of the belt. What is your call as the RO?

Is that a laser trainer in your chamber?

May 6, 2021 by Jodi Humann

Or are you just excited to shoot the stage? With the ammo shortage, I am sure everyone is getting more dry fire time, and many people use laser trainers or snap caps. But what if this happens at the match: “You are the RO and you give the competitor the ‘Make Ready’ command. The competitor inserts a magazine, racks the slide, but can’t seem to get a round to chamber. The competitor drops the magazine and locks back the slide. You see a laser trainer cartridge in the chamber. What is your call as the RO?”
