Standard Exercises and Speed Shoots

October 24, 2019 by Jodi Humann

It seems like there is a dislike for Standard Exercises and Speed Shoots, both from competitors and stage designers. The competitors dislike them because they require following stage procedures, and failure to do so is heavily penalized. Stage designers shy away from them because there are so many rules about designing a legal course of fire. But in reality, these course types can be used to test very specific shooting skills and are great additions to matches if done properly.

Is that thumb rest legal?

September 1, 2019 by Jodi Humann

We get a lot of questions about the legality of thumb rests in the different USPSA divisions, so for the August Question of the Month, we asked which divisions allow thumb rests. A thumb rest is a device that is attached to the frame with the purpose of reducing recoil.

The mysteries of Virginia Count

August 26, 2019 by Jodi Humann

Love it or hate it, Virginia Count scoring is part of USPSA. Virginia Count (VC) scoring is another way to provide a different shooting challenge by limiting the number of shots at targets versus the Comstock scoring method where competitors can shoot at the targets as many times as they choose. Most people dislike VC simply because they don’t understand how it works, especially when a competitor shoots the stage wrong.

Moving targets and activation

August 5, 2019 by Jodi Humann

Moving targets, ones that remain visible at rest or disappear after movement, are an easy way to add a challenge to any stage design. And when a competitor activates the targets per the WSB, then there usually isn’t a problem….other than some possible misses. But, what happens when a competitor fails to activate a moving target? The July Question of the Month asked: What is the penalty for not activating a disappearing target before the last shot?
