The 2024 rulebooks release today (February 29th) and that means we have new rules to discuss! If you look at the USPSA Competition Rules you will see a new rule about not overlapping scoring targets directly on top of each other. Let’s look at the new rule, discuss why it was added, and some example target layouts.

REF, Range Equipment Failure, What Now?
What constitutes REF? The rule book describes it as:
4.6.1 Range equipment must present the challenge fairly and equitably to all competitors. Range equipment failure includes the displacement of cardboard targets, the premature activation of metal or moving targets, the failure to reset moving targets or steel targets, the malfunction of mechanically or electrically operated equipment, and the failure of props such as openings, ports, and barriers.

In 2023, there was a change in the rules as to the legality of using steel plates in upper level USPSA Competition matches. Most Area and National matches already avoided using steel plates to minimize reshoots to ensure the match stayed on schedule, so most competitors probably didn’t even notice the change. But we wanted to quiz our rules aficionados and see if they noticed the change in the January Question of the Month.
