Keeping with the theme of recent rule changes, we wanted to see if everyone noticed the additions to the rules concerning remedial action in this Question of the Month. During a course of fire, a PCC competitor adjusts the length of his stock with his finger in the trigger guard. What is your call as RO?
Yes, as the RO you should say “Stop,” complete the range commands, and DQ the competitor. Prior to February 29, 2024 the rules did not address this specific situation. This change was actually based on a question we received that got us thinking about it.
The applicable rule for this question is 10.5.8: Failure to keep the finger outside the trigger guard while clearing a malfunction or when adjusting a part on the firearm (e.g., stock, sight).
The words in italics were added in the February 2024 rulebook. Those words were also added to rule 10.4.4 (when an AD occurs while doing the actions in 10.5.8). And with the popularity of adjustable stocks on PCCs and optics on most firearms at matches, these are two actions that are not considered a remedial action to remedy a malfunction but can happen during the course of fire. And since safety is the most important thing at matches, we want to ensure these actions are done safely, and it made sense to amend these two rules.
So remember to practice keeping your finger out of the trigger guard while adjusting your stock, optic, or sight. It’s a good habit to learn and will prevent that DQ at a match.
And remember to cast a vote in the current Question of the Month!
