We Need a Rule(ing)

August 27, 2020 by Kevin Imel

Here at NROI, we frequently get queries from someone about what rule prevents a shooter, or can be used to prevent a shooter, from doing x, y or z. While many of these fall into the “help them find the relevant rule(s)” category, a fair number fall into “there isn’t any rule that does that”. Sometimes they insist that we need a rule, or a ruling, declaring said action illegal. And 99.9% of those simply are things that really aren’t rule worthy but should be taken care of with proper stage design, WSB authoring, and setup. Let’s look at a few examples. I’ve generalized the questions somewhat.

Proper NROI Clothing Wear – Recap and Clarification

May 28, 2020 by Troy McManus

(This information was originally published in Down Range, the USPSA News Brief, in August of 2018.)

Many NROI certified Range Officials are deservedly proud of their accomplishments, and we recognize that.  We recently, with our partner, TechWear USA, made official NROI jerseys available.  Judging by the number of orders received, those jerseys are a big hit, and rightly so—they are attractive and comfortable, and a great way to show off your NROI certification.  However, there is a right time to wear your NROI apparel, and times when it should not be worn.

What really matters?

May 14, 2020 by Kevin Imel

Recently I have been looking at some sports that are similar to USPSA/SCSA in that they have a very large amateur component run at a local level and a smaller professional component at a state, regional, national and world level. Many of those sports face some of the same challenges we do so it can be interesting to see how they have solved those problems. One of those ventures is a return to almost 40 years ago for me, archery. I put up the bow when I headed to college and haven’t really paid any attention to it since.

NROI Seminar Facilities

February 20, 2020 by Evans Kuo

Over the years the Range Master Instructors have taught classes in a wide variety of facilities, some of which were perfectly suited to the seminar, others left some things to be desired. NROI requests feedback from students after each seminar to improve course content and delivery. Occasionally when the class was held in a less than ideal facility we hear about it, which is good feedback in and of itself, but it probably needs to be directed at the course organizer that picked the facility.

Why we are so passionate about the rules

December 19, 2019 by Jodi Humann

Okay, maybe passionate isn’t the right word. I like to think of USPSA members who strive to be experts about the rules as aficionados. And as fans of the rules, do we get a little grumpy when people are cavalier with them? Yes, we do.

On Being Human

November 21, 2019 by Kevin Imel

Despite our best efforts, we all show our human side now and then. That’s the side that is fallible. The side that we all love to hate. To err is human…or so they say. It is often how we handle that errors that defines us to others. Interestingly this seems to be something we all struggle with from early childhood until we shuffle off our mortal coil and pass on to whatever is next. And our human behavior affects every aspect of our lives including being an official at a USPSA/SCSA event.

Questions, Answers, and Rulings

June 16, 2019 by Troy McManus

Here’s a common misconception about rulings versus simple answers to questions:  A ruling is made through the official ruling system, which requires the ruling to be approved by the board of directors, and doesn’t go into effect until 7 days after the ruling has been approved.  Rulings can change or interpret an existing rule, but are never made without cause and a demonstrable need for the change.  There is a system for this which requires a written ruling and the reason for that ruling, along with possible consequences of the ruling—all of that information goes to the board.
