RO Position and the 180

August 20, 2020 by Troy McManus

I’ve recently received several questions concerning range officers placing themselves right along the 180° or 90° line in a stage, obviously looking for violations.  This is a very bad idea, and here’s why:  by placing yourself on the 180, you are begging to have a loaded gun pointed at you if (when) the competitor’s muzzle breaks the 90-degree median intercept of the backstop.  This is especially hazardous when a rear fault line runs slightly downrange, putting you, the RO, in an even more precarious position.

Special Penalty, 10.2.10

July 9, 2020 by Troy McManus

USPSA rules have several allowances for differently abled competitors to play our game, but on occasion a person is physically unable to comply with the design elements of a stage. That’s when the Special Penalty comes into play.

NROI Tips – Overlays and Scoring

June 25, 2020 by Troy McManus

Safety is a Range Officers number one job, no doubt, but we are officiating a competition, and for there to be a competition, there must be a score. Getting an accurate score for each competitor is crucial to the USPSA mission of “Safe, Fun, Fair” Practical Shooting. NROI provides tools to help all range officials call hits accurately-those little plastic cards we call overlays. This NROI Tips video demonstrates the proper use of overlays, and make sure to read the information below the video to learn more.

Range Master application changes

June 4, 2020 by Troy McManus

NROI has updated the application process for the Range Master program.  In the past, applications have been received and evaluated throughout the year, but now applications will only be accepted between November 1 and December 31 of each year.  With a limited number of instructors, this timing allows for current students to complete their program during Nationals events throughout the year and make room for new students at the first of the year.

Proper NROI Clothing Wear – Recap and Clarification

May 28, 2020 by Troy McManus

(This information was originally published in Down Range, the USPSA News Brief, in August of 2018.)

Many NROI certified Range Officials are deservedly proud of their accomplishments, and we recognize that.  We recently, with our partner, TechWear USA, made official NROI jerseys available.  Judging by the number of orders received, those jerseys are a big hit, and rightly so—they are attractive and comfortable, and a great way to show off your NROI certification.  However, there is a right time to wear your NROI apparel, and times when it should not be worn.

Classifiers and Special Classifier Matches

April 30, 2020 by Troy McManus

Guest post by Jake Martens, Director of Media & Events, A52987

The USPSA Classification system is a way to compare your skill level to other members and track your progress. The stages have been designed to test your shooting skills against high hit factors that have been set in each division. There are differences in the hit factors between divisions because each division is somewhat unique based on the allowed gear and firearms.

New Rulings: Competition, Multigun, Steel Challenge

April 16, 2020 by Troy McManus

There are a few new rulings up for voting by the board.  Most of them are simple clarifications of existing rules, adjustments to the wording on some, and additions to one rule set so that it mirrors the others, particularly covering safety issues that should be common to the three rule sets.  None of them affect equipment types.  Here’s a short summary:
