In this NROI Tips video we look at some of the basic things that Steel Challenge ROs need to watch for. The video covers start positions, timer positioning, assisting vs. coaching, and the new rimfire commands.
For the centerfire pistol start positions remember that the RO needs to be able to see the wrists above the shoulders from behind the competitor (see rule 8.8.2). If a competitor for centerfire or rimfire or PCC, is not in the correct start position, the RO should ask them to correct the position and not start the competitor until they are in the correct position.
Also remember to watch the timer for pistol divisions too, especially rimfire pistol. For rimfire pistol, holding the timer in the same position as for PCC and rimfire rifle works. The most important thing is for the RO to make sure the shots are being registered. And it is essential for the scorekeeper to help watch for hits and help the timer RO who is busy making sure that shots are being recorded by the timer.
While Steel Challenge officiating appears simple, there are still many things that ROs should watch for to ensure safe, fair, and fun shooting for all competitors.
