USPSA Certified Ammunition

January 30, 2025 by Troy McManus

Just a reminder about the USPSA Certified Ammunition Program, and what should be happening at matches where people are using certified ammo. Level II and III are where you’ll see it, but it can be used at Level I if there is a chrono station.

First, we have a declaration form, called Certified Ammo Declaration, that must be filled out at sign-in/registration.  Without that, the competitor cannot declare at chronograph.  The process is spelled out, but they basically complete the form and hand over 8 rounds as a delivery sample.  Registration people need to get this to the chronograph station as soon as possible, and the RM can help with that.  Chrono hangs onto these just like all the other collected ammo, and asks each competitor if they are using certified ammunition.  The competitor must still turn over another 8 rounds as a chronograph sample. If the chrono sample ammo passes chrono, what remains is returned to the competitor along with the delivery sample and the chrono officer(s) complete the form for our records. If the delivery sample ammo must be shot to compare with the competitor’s chronograph sample, the procedure is the same, but the information is also recorded as 124.5/123.9, where the first number is the chrono sample, the second the delivery sample.  Same procedure for leftover ammo and the paperwork.

We have a published list of approved certified ammo vendors, which also lists the SKU for the ammo. Not all ammunition supplied by a vendor is certified, so be aware of that, please.  I’ve included a list of vendors without specific SKU numbers for reference, so if someone shows up with Winchester, you’ll know it’s not on the list and not eligible for the program.  There is a printable version that lists everything.  I recommend you print that out and ensure that registration and chronograph each have a copy.

Collection, as I mentioned, occurs at registration/sign-in.  You should ensure there is a sufficient quantity of forms and bags for the ammo.  The form should be folded so the competitor information is visible,, and the rounds and form put into the bag.

See Appendix C3, USPSA Competition Rules for rules details concerning Certified Ammunition

Last, once the match is over, please send the forms to me, either scanned in as a PDF or by mail or UPS/Fedex.  My address is:

3669 Christina Ave.

Baton Rouge, LA 70820

email: dnroi@uspsa.org

I send a report to the vendors annually to make them aware of their ammo usage and the power factors and to head off any developing problems, so this information is critical.

Last, if you are using the official calibration ammo available from Eley, through Killough Shooting Sports, please send me the chronograph results on that as well.  This will help to ensure their ammo remains within the power factors recommended in the rules.  Gun make and barrel length also help as well as temperature and elevation.
